What are the main advantages of using the Plane Quiet Headphones?

  • They can reduce background noise up to 17db to allow for less fatigue over time from background noise.
  • You can listen to music or audio entertainment at a lower volume and more clearly in noisy environments.
  • You can plug into your own or aircraft entertainment systems with the dual plug adapter.
  • You can reduce distractions from noise to allow for more effective work or sleep.

I fly a lot including trips including on commuter planes, International and "redeye" flights. Will these headphones make flying more enjoyable and less tiring?

Yes! You are exactly the customer the "Plane Quiet" was designed for. While they can't help with the "hassle factor" of flying and security, they will certainly help you arrive more rested. The passive and active noise reduction of the headphones will take the background noises in the aircraft down to a whisper and take the edge off the PA announcements, crying babies, and conversations around you. They should also provide a quieter environment for work or sleep as well as discourage that talkative seatmate from trying to learn your life story in a 2 hour flight. Since typical noise fatigue is subtle and cumulative the longer and louder the flight the more benefit you will experience. The most noticeable difference is when you have to take the headphones off when descending below 10,000 feet for landing and you experience the noise you were missing.

How much do the Plane Quiet Headphones weigh?

They weigh only about 7 ounces (compared to 13 ounces for the Bose) and headband folds to allow them to be packed flat to take up less space. They also come with a sturdy carrying case to protect the headphones when traveling.

What is the difference between active and passive noise reduction?

Passive noise reduction is the noise reduced by covering the ears and Active noise reduction is the noise reduced from the ANR electronic circuitry. The Plane Quiet headphones feature both Passive and Active noise reduction which reduces noise a combined total of up to 17dB at 300hz.

How is the sound, ANR performance, and construction quality compared to the similar product from Bose?

"......In terms of noise cancelling, the Bose headphones are slightly better than the Plane Quiet headphones.  They are appreciably better at passive noise cancelling, and so even if their active noise cancelling isn't quite as good, overall they edge slightly ahead of the PQ headphones.  In terms of sound quality, the two headphones perform very similarly.  There may be a slight difference in favor of the Bose, but this is not something that would be normally noticeable in usual listening environments.  Their sound level/efficiency is closely comparable.  Overall, the Bose headphones are larger and heavier, about the same in audio reproduction quality and comfort, and slightly better in terms of noise cancelling. The other point of difference is, ahem, the cost.  The Plane Quiet NC-7 headphones are $80.  The Bose QC-3 headphones are $350, and if you add the recommended accessories to the order, you're spending $450.  Does this closely balanced mix of pluses and minuses justify the difference in price between $80 and $350-450?  Almost certainly not.  You can buy four or five sets of the NC7s for the same price as one set of the QC3s"......quoted from review by David M. Rowell The Travel Insider

Is the cord detachable?

No the cord itself does not detach from headphones which prevents the cord from getting separated from the headphones and lost.

What type of noise is reduced and will these block out loud stereos, sirens, voices, snoring etc.?

The ANR circuitry works best reducing steady  monotonous type high and low frequency background noise such as produced by a fan or engine and is much less effective on sharp noises such as a door slamming shut or loud voices.

I put them on and turned on the noise reduction but why didn't the headphones "cancel" the outside noises like I expected?

The noise reduction is not dramatic when first turned on since only a very slight hissing sound is detected. They also need some background noise to cancel out so try turning on a fan or engine noise to compare. The main benefit to these headphones is experienced when exposed to background noise over a longer period of time and the difference in fatigue with and without the headphones on. Also steady background noise is more effectively reduced than sharp noises such as a door closing or voices.

I work in an extremely noisy environment where my hearing could be damaged. Will these headphones protect my hearing?

The Plane Quiet would not be the best choice for hearing protection. The headphones were designed for comfort when wearing them for extended periods and not for maximum hearing protection. The total noise reduction was limited to the maximum allowed by the FAA aboard aircraft. It would be better to purchase a product specifically designed for hearing protection such as shooting range style headphones and earplugs that can provide up to twice hearing protection of the Plane quiet headphones.

Can I use the Plane Quiet Headphones in a car or truck?

Yes but most states don't allow the driver to wear headphones for safety reasons since they would impair their ability to hear horns, sirens. etc.

How long will the battery last and can I use rechargeable batteries?

The product uses one AAA size battery which will last up to 14 hours depending on the battery's capacity and whether you are also listening to music through the headphones. You can also use a rechargeable AAA size NiMH or NiCd battery. These battery types tend to lose their charge if unused after about 30 days so if you use your headphones several times a month rechargeable batteries would offer some cost savings but would be less convenient if you use them infrequently and had to charge them before each use.

Can I use the headphones to listen to my own music player or the aircraft music or movie?

Yes the Plane Quiet adapter plug is compatible with most personal and aircraft entertainment systems including iPods and DVD players .  Additional adapter types can be purchased at www.planequiet.com.

Do I still have to pay for the movie on the airplane now that I am using my own headphones?

In most cases no. Most airlines have recently changed their in flight entertainment policies from a pay per view with headphone rental to no charge for entertainment and headphone sales. This saves the airline the cost of collecting and cleaning the headphones after each use. Some aircraft have two pin adapter plugs and some just one pin and the Plane Quiet adapter plug will work with either type.

Can I return them if I am not satisfied with the performance?
