Plane
Quiet Noise Cancelling
Headphones from OutsideThe Box Inc.
The
Headset Can Be Used Three Different Ways:
-
To eliminate noises
only
-
To listen to
the airline's sound programs-music or movies (save$$) or
-
To listen to one's own portable
sound source, for example an iPod or MP3 player, DVD or laptop computer.
Features:
-
Combined passive and active
noise cancellation of 17dB at 300
Hz
-
The
headphones come with a durable case suitable for a gift
with AAA battery included.
-
Easy to
use with a single
on/off switch
-
Battery
life playing music, is around 14 hours. (Battery life depends
on whether you're just using the headphones to quiet background sounds or if
you're also playing music through them).
-
To take
up as little space as
possible when traveling the headband
folds. The headphones
weigh
about 7 ounces.
-
The electronics for
the unit are located in a control
box on the cord. There
is an on and off switch with LED to indicate if the unit is switched
on.
-
The unit will play
music in a 'pass-through' mode if the battery is
dead. When turned on and
with a live battery, the headset not only passes the music through but also offers some
additional amplification.

Plane
Quiet Active Noise Reduction ANR Headphones
Most
of us don't realize how much noise there is in everyday activities, especially
flying. Here is a sound comparison: passengers in jet planes typically
experience sound pressures levels from 75 - 85 dBA(a weighted decibel
measurement in the frequency ranges of human hearing) and commuter turboprops
are even noisier with levels near 90 dBA. A Gun shot is approximately 140 dBA;
rock concerts range 110-115 dBA; mowing the lawn on a riding tractor is 90 dBA. So, as you can see, for those who travel regularly the
"Plane Quiet" headset could very well protect against hearing loss. By
detecting and canceling out the potentially damaging frequencies between 400 and
1000 Hz, Active Noise Canceling Headphones work to protect
your hearing and enhance your comfort when traveling in commercial
aircraft and other mass transit environments.
The
"Plane Quiet" headset features the proprietary active noise reduction
technology first incorporated into aviation headsets. Thanks to an advanced
acoustic design technology breakthrough, the headset dramatically reduces
unpleasant noise and provides high quality high fidelity audio reproduction.
How
It Works
For years, pilots
have taken advantage of Active Noise Reduction (ANR) technology in their
headsets to protect their hearing and reduce in-flight fatigue. ANR circuitry
detects ambient noise and creates an equal but opposite sound wave to cancel it
out, resulting in reduced noise levels and enhanced comfort for the wearer.
The "Plane Quiet" headset suppresses unwanted high and low frequency
noise, from screeches to rumbles, with 15 dB (decibels) of attenuation across
the range of human hearing. It is an integrated system that combines proprietary
electro-acoustic and ergonomic technologies leading to the same kind of full
spectrum noise reduction characteristic of other military and aviation products.
First,
the earcups cradle the ear at an ergonomically canted angle that is the natural
and comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. The headrest automatically
adjusts to fit the head. Second, through special electronic circuitry, the
headset actively lessens most of the noise that cannot be eliminated by simply
covering the ears.
Tiny microphones in
the headphone electronically "listen" to the noise that's coming at
the user's ear and transmit information about that noise to the unit's ANR
circuitry. It analyzes the offending noise and immediately sends back to the
headphones a special noise cancellation wave, or "anti-noise," that
meets the unwanted noise and cancels it.
The ANR circuitry is most effective
against steady, low frequency (20-1500 Hz) sounds, such as that produced by
airplane jet and turboprop engines and propeller noise, fans and even car
engines. Noise in this range is the most damaging to hearing and causes the most
fatigue and interference with conversations and music.
This
correction signal, when reproduced by the speaker in the earcup, significantly
reduces the noise leaving the desired sound. The process of measuring, creating
a correction signal and lessening the noise is rapid and constant, thus the
headset reacts to any dynamically changing noise.

Another
Benefit
Outside The Box Inc. tested the product on several frequent fliers such as
business travelers and airline employees, and they came to a surprising
conclusion, "Over seventy-five percent of the travelers felt less tired at
the end of their flight. We have also found medical studies that supported this:
low frequency noise leads to fatigue. If we take away the noise, the advantage
is you feel better than the guy next to you." Aircraft roar, especially for
many hours, affects the way people hear and feel. With the headset, travelers
should arrive rested and relaxed.
